Deep Ones is an action arcade style platformer developed by ‘Burp! Games’. Deep Ones is coming out on 11th of April for Xbox One and 28th of April for Nintendo Switch but already out on PC. Don’t expect fancy graphics here it’s all suppose to be retro looking. Let’s take a look.
The story of Deep Ones is that the main character, who looks like a deep sea diver from Scooby doo, was in a his submarine but had a crash. Why? because of some giant red Octopus who has issues. Basically it has a need to just destroy every traveller that he comes across. Our character Diver, it’s just some tourist or simple traveller. He goes out to traverse the bottom of the ocean. Enter the darkest parts of the ocean and cut his way through the dreaded… sea weed that is in his path.
Now off course it ain’t that simple. Diver will have to face the monsters of the unknown… monsters of the deep in order to get his submarine back. So what the red octopus left it intact or something? The game does encourage you to take in the sights as there are some landscapes that are worth viewing (we will be the judge of that). Not only that, but there are some others down there who can become trustworthy allies to aid you in your survival and have stories of their own to share with the player.
Deep Ones is said to have a philosophical storyline so expect some thinking to take place. Like why does the ocean have too have water and why are their creatures in the deep? It really makes you think (not really). maybe that’s also why it’s called Deep Ones… because it’s real deep. If you couldn’t tell, the visual presentation of the game has been inspired by the ZX Spectrum. That explains the colours and lines etc. Pretty cool. We at X35 Earthwalker do like how it is presented.
The last thing but most likely the most unique and cool thing about Deep Ones is the fact that it’s said to have multi-genre parts. So basically the game is mainly platformer yes but there will be parts in the game where things get mixed up and other genres get introduced. There will be a part where you will not be on foot but riding an animal and firing like a chase, then there will be a moment where the game will be like a shoot em up for example. This honestly sounds cool so let’s hope that was executed well.
We checked out some gameplay and it looks like a retro styled action platformer. It’s off course nothing special or amazing but it does look like it’s made well and it’s doing it’s own thing. There are many enemies that all have their own behaviour and attack patterns. You can use a harpoon like gun and there is a even a sword for melee combat. Expect boss enemies as well which have predictable patterns but that was how the old games use to be like. Get the pattern and then exploit it. Nothing wrong here so far.
Overall Deep Ones sounds like a good game. According to the reviews we have seen, most say that it is good and has been recommended as well. The controls are said to be sort of bad but that’s probably difficult controls to replicate some of the games of the old times. Who knows. The graphics are nice but the music stands out much more. The developers ‘Burp! Games’ did a great job with this game. We at X35 Earthwalker aren’t interested but we do suggest that gamers take a look at it for themselves. Now a giant red octopus is bad, but it ain’t good enough for… the ‘Earth Walk!’
